5 New Year’s Resolutions You Can Make to Keep Your Smile Healthy

One way to make sure the new year gets off to an excellent start is to come up with a few resolutions to improve your health and your quality of life. In particular, you might consider making some changes to your oral care routine in order to ensure that your teeth and gums stay safe all throughout 2023. Below are 5 examples of New Year’s resolutions that can lead to better dental health.

1. Make Flossing a Daily Habit

You’ve probably heard from your dentist plenty of times that you should be flossing every day, but statistics show that 58% of people don’t floss at all. If you aren’t flossing, plaque and tartar could easily build up between your teeth, eventually leading to gum disease and tooth decay. To keep your smile safe, take whatever steps are necessary to make flossing a habit.

2. Brush Longer

The average person only brushes for about 45 to 70 seconds a day. To clean your smile as thoroughly as possible, it’s recommended that each brushing session lasts for at least two minutes. It may be a good idea to invest in an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer; that way, you can be sure that you’re brushing for as long as you need to.

3. Quit Smoking

If you smoke, there are plenty of oral health reasons why you should stop. Smoking significantly increases your risk of gum disease and oral cancer, and it can eventually lead to tooth loss. It will be best for your smile (and the rest of your body) if you give up smoking as soon as possible. Look online to see what resources are available to help you quit tobacco.

4. Don’t Snack as Much

Many people resolve to eat less during the new year in an effort to lose weight. What you may not realize, though, is that cutting down on snacking is also good for your teeth. Bacteria can turn the sugars and starches in the foods you eat into acids that wear down your enamel; consequently, eating constantly throughout the day extends the amount of time your teeth are exposed to these acids. The less you snack, the easier it is to protect your grin.

5. Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months

If you aren’t already visiting the dentist at least twice a year, 2023 is the perfect time to change that. Regular dental appointments are essential for having oral health issues detected while they’re still in their early, easier-to-treat stages. Pick up the phone today to schedule your next dental visit and start the new year off on the right foot.
