If you’re looking into tooth replacement options, there are quite a few good options to consider—dentures, dental implants, and bridges can all produce incredible results. That said there’s, there’s one way to replace missing teeth that stands out from the rest.

Dental implants are considered the gold standard of tooth replacement. They feel natural, can be maintained easily, and boast an incredible lifespan. But how long do they last exactly? Here’s everything you need to know to properly answer that question

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

With most dental procedures, their lifespan can vary wildly depending on many factors. Dental Implants, however, are shockingly reliable; 95% of implants will last over 20 years. Even better, it’s common to see them last as long as 30 years with proper maintenance. That’s 3-4 times longer than removable bridges or dentures.

How Do I Make My Implants Last?

While they’re remarkably reliable, some factors can cause a dental implant to fail prematurely. If you want your dental implants to last as long as possible, there are two things you need to avoid.

Poor Healing

The first potential point of failure is in the weeks after the surgery. Dental implants are secured to the jawbone directly, so if the jaw doesn’t heal properly the implant could come loose. Fortunately, the healing process is fairly straightforward; just take it easy for a few weeks, and you should be fine. Don’t brush the surgical area too hard, and avoid strenuous exercise that could cause a spike in blood flow to the mouth.

If you have a condition that impairs the body’s healing process, tell your dentist; they may need to consult your doctor to develop a treatment plan for you. It’s also recommended to avoid tobacco for two weeks before and ninety days after your surgery, as this can also impair the healing process

Infection

The second thing that can cause dental implant failure is an infection that reaches below the gumline. This condition, called peri-implantitis, can cause bone loss in the jaw, which might cause the implant to come loose.

You can prevent this condition the way you would any gum disease. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and use an antibacterial mouthwash to remove plaque buildup.

While there are a few potential pitfalls, dental implants are incredibly durable. So long as you’re diligent with your hygiene, you can expect them to last for decades to come.
