Do you have an upcoming dental implant surgery? You may have a million questions about what it will be like after your procedure. Hopefully, your oral surgeon will address most of your concerns during your visit. In the meantime, here are answers to five common post-op questions you may have.
Can I Drive Myself Home?
Medication is often used for dental implant surgeries to help patients relax and feel comfortable. Before the procedure begins, your mouth will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Sedation may even be used to soothe your nerves, if necessary. As a result of these relaxation methods, it may take some time for your alertness and coordination to return to normal. Your surgery team will likely require you have someone you trust to drive you home.
Should I Expect Bleeding?
It’s completely normal for blood to ooze from the surgical site for 2-3 days following the procedure. Immediately after the surgery, your dentist will place gauze over the surgical site and have you bite down firmly for at least an hour to control bleeding. Avoid spitting and rinsing as it can make the bleeding worse. If you experience heavy bleeding after you get home, contact your dentist’s office right away.
When Can I Eat?
You can eat something about an hour or so after your procedure. However, you must stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours following the surgery. Within this time frame, you must avoid hot foods and cannot drink from a straw. After your initial healing period, you may be able to start eating tender foods that a fork can cut through easily.
Is Recovery Painful?
This one of the most common questions from patients, but rest assured, the entire process is much easier and more comfortable than most patients anticipate! Of course, the amount of discomfort you experience during recovery will depend on how extensive your surgery was. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication if they deem it necessary. If they don’t, you can alleviate any discomfort with over-the-counter medicine. In either case, be sure you take the medication as instructed. Lots of rest and being diligent about following aftercare instructions will help keep your discomfort to a minimum.
How Soon Can I Resume Normal Activities?
Your dentist may ask you to limit strenuous activities for about three days following your surgery. However, most people feel well enough to return to work within a day or two. You can even resume light activities as soon as you feel up for it!
Dental implants are a great solution to rebuild your smile. Surgery is just the start of your journey towards a picture-perfect grin, and with the right oral surgeon, you can expect a breezy recovery.
